Overview of the Best of Rwanda’s National Parks Safari.

Akagera  |  Nyungwe Forest  |  Volcanoes National Park

10 Days  |  Fully Private  |  Big Five, Chimpanzees, Mountain Gorillas & Golden Monkeys

Rwanda is not one country. It is three.

There is the Rwanda of the east: wide, open, golden with dry-season light, where lions move through tall grass beside oxbow lakes and hippos barely bother to lift their heads as your boat drifts past. There is the Rwanda of the south: ancient and cathedral-dark, where the forest that has stood for millennia closes over you like a hand, and a chimpanzee screams somewhere in the canopy above with a volume that rearranges your understanding of what a forest is for. And there is the Rwanda of the north: volcanic, cool, and impossibly still at dawn, where a mountain gorilla family sits in a clearing of wild celery, and the silverback watches you with the composure of someone who has decided, long ago, that you are not a threat.

Most travelers choose one. The Best of Rwanda’s National Parks Safari is for the traveler who refuses to.

This is the complete Rwanda: ten days and three completely distinct ecosystems, each offering a wildlife experience that is not replicated anywhere else on the continent, sequenced in an order that builds savannah to rainforest to volcanic highlands like a piece of music composed for a single listener. It is the itinerary that Rwanda Gorilla Expeditions recommends to guests who ask the most important question in luxury travel: not ‘what can I afford?’ but ‘what does Rwanda actually offer, and how do I experience all of it?’

The answer is this journey. Every day has revolved around a genuine wildlife encounter that no other African destination could replicate. Every transfer is private. Every lodge has been selected for its understanding of what luxury means in a landscape of this intensity. And every detail from your gorilla permit to your boat on the lakes is arranged before you land, confirmed, and waiting.

Accommodation: Where You Rest Matters.

Because this excursion is a day trip that begins and ends in Kigali, your accommodation forms the bookends of the experience. Rwanda Gorilla Expeditions works with Kigali’s finest properties to ensure your pre-trek rest is undisturbed and your return arrival is comfortable and anticipated.

For those staying in Kigali, we recommend the Kigali Marriott Hotel for its central location and consistent luxury standards, the Radisson Blu for its views across the city’s hills, or the Retreat by Heaven for something smaller and more intimate. For travellers who prefer to stay closer to the park and add an overnight stay before or after the trek, properties such as Wilderness Bisate Lodge, One & Only Gorilla’s Nest, and Singita Kwitonda Lodge represent the very finest of what Rwanda’s high-end lodge sector has to offer, each delivering a wilderness experience that rivals the trek itself in beauty and intent.

Accommodation selections can be tailored to your preferences as part of a wider Rwanda itinerary. Browse our Rwanda safari experiences to discover how gorilla trekking fits into a broader journey through one of Africa’s most extraordinary countries.

Best Time to Travel

For Akagera National Park: Game Drives & Boat Safari

Akagera is most rewarding in the dry season from June through September and December through February, when the vegetation thins and wildlife concentrates around the lake systems, making sightings more consistent and photography cleaner. The long dry season is the peak season for lion tracking in particular, as the reduced cover makes these naturally elusive animals far more visible. The wet seasons, April to May and October to November, bring the park alive with green and fill the wetlands with extraordinary concentrations of migratory waterbirds, but the thicker vegetation and muddier tracks make some of the interior roads inaccessible. Boat safaris on Lake Ihema operate year-round with only the heaviest rainfall causing temporary suspension.

For Nyungwe Forest, Chimpanzee Trekking & Canopy Walk.

Nyungwe presents a genuine argument for each season. The dry months offer firmer trails, less mud on the steep approaches, and clearer conditions for the canopy walkway the elevated perspective is most dramatic when the valley below is not obscured by cloud. However, many experienced Nyungwe guides prefer the shorter wet season of October to November for chimpanzee encounters, arguing that the fruiting patterns of the wet forest concentrate the chimps in more predictable locations. June and July are considered the premium months for combining comfortable trekking with the best primate behavior. Nyungwe’s altitude (between 1,600 and 2,950 metres) means temperatures are always cool, regardless of season; pack for cold mornings even in the dry months.

For Volcanoes National Park, Gorilla Trekking & Golden Monkeys.

Gorilla trekking in Rwanda operates every day of the year, with a sighting success rate consistently above 98%. Dedicated ranger teams track the gorilla families from first light every morning. The trekking experience, however, varies significantly with the season. The long dry season from June through September offers firm trails, excellent forest visibility, and the most comfortable hiking conditions. This is also peak season, meaning gorilla permits sell out months in advance. For the Best of Rwanda’s National Parks Safari, we typically recommend planning a June–September departure four to six months in advance, or a December–February departure two to three months ahead. The wet seasons offer a wilder, greener, more solitary experience of the forest with the significant caveat that trail conditions can be genuinely challenging.

Ready For a Once in a Lifetime Experience?

Start your Journey

The difference is sequencing and continuity. Booking three separate Rwanda park experiences through different operators, or as disconnected segments, produces three good days in three different parks. This itinerary produces something architecturally different: a ten-day journey in which each ecosystem prepares you physically, emotionally, and intellectually for the next. The savannah’s open abundance sets a baseline of wildlife wonder. The rainforest deepens it into something more complex and ancestral. The volcanic highlands complete it with the single most profound wildlife encounter available anywhere in Africa. With one guide coordinating your entire journey, one operator managing every permit and transfer, and lodges selected specifically for how they work together as a sequence, the experience is categorically different from the sum of its parts.

The itinerary includes activities at three distinct levels of physical demand, and your trip designer will discuss your group’s fitness profile at the planning stage. Game drives in Akagera require no physical exertion beyond sitting comfortably in a vehicle for several hours. The canopy walkway in Nyungwe involves a moderate uphill walk of roughly an hour. Chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe is the most demanding activity prior to the gorilla trek: steep, root-covered, sometimes very slippery terrain for one to three hours. Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park ranges from forty minutes to four hours, depending on the location of the gorilla family. Porters are available and strongly recommended on both primate trekking days. Most reasonably active adults complete all activities successfully with proper preparation.

This is the question most guests ask before the trip, and none ask afterward. Akagera is not the Serengeti, the Masai Mara, or Kruger, and it is not trying to be. What it offers is something more specific and, in many ways, more moving: a park that was genuinely broken and has been genuinely fixed. The lion reintroduction program, the black rhino recovery, and the elephant population stability these are not marketing narratives; they are verifiable conservation achievements that took over a decade of hard work. Being in a park where you know the lions were absent twenty years ago and are now raising cubs, where the black rhino you photograph may be one of fewer than forty surviving in the entire country, gives the wildlife encounters a weight and significance that older, more established parks do not always carry in the same way.

Absolutely, and many guests do. The most natural beach extension from Rwanda is Zanzibar, a direct flight from Kigali and a complete sensory contrast from ten days of highland wildlife. The Seychelles, Mozambique’s Bazaruto Archipelago, and the Kenyan coast at Watamu or Lamu are also popular extensions for guests traveling from Europe or the Middle East. Guests who want to explore East Africa’s wildlife circuit further can pair Uganda’s Queen Elizabeth National Park or gorilla trekking in Bwindi with a journey focused on Rwanda. Your Rwanda Gorilla Expeditions trip designer can coordinate the full extension through our network of regional partners.

For travel in the peak dry season, June through September, we recommend booking the full itinerary at least five to six months in advance. Gorilla trekking permits for these months are the limiting factor and frequently sell out before anything else; permits for July and August are sometimes unavailable as early as February. For December through February travel, three to four months usually suffices, but you should not leave it much shorter. Outside of peak season, two months is workable for most elements of the itinerary, with the exception of gorilla permits, which always require advance planning. The practical guidance is: if you have dates, the best time to begin is now.

Nyungwe Forest National Park is a fully managed, professionally staffed national park with armed ranger escorts on all primate trekking activities. The park management team excellently manages guest safety, and they keep incident rates extremely low. The main health consideration for chimpanzee trekking is the same as for gorilla trekking: visitors showing symptoms of respiratory illness, coughing, and fever may be asked not to trek, as great apes are susceptible to human respiratory pathogens. This protocol is strictly enforced for the animals’ protection. Travel health insurance, including emergency medical evacuation, is strongly recommended for the full itinerary. Your trip designer will provide a comprehensive health and preparation briefing on booking.

All three parks have excellent luxury lodge options, and the accommodation on this itinerary has been specifically selected for quality and consistency across the full journey. Akagera’s lodge scene has improved dramatically since African Parks took over management. The park now hosts properties with excellent facilities, thoughtfully designed rooms, and dining that reflects the quality guests expect throughout their trip. Nyungwe’s top-end lodges sit at the forest edge, offering some of the most dramatic views in Rwanda. Volcanoes National Park has the widest range of luxury options on the continent for a gorilla destination, including some properties that rank among the finest lodges in all of Africa. There is no quality dip at any point in the sequence.

Flash photography is strictly prohibited during all gorilla trekking activities, as the flash can distress the animals. Gorillas often encounter the dim forest understory, which is filtered by several canopy layers. For the best results, use a camera with strong low-light performance, and a fast, wide-aperture lens (f/2.8 or wider) is ideal. Mirrorless cameras with large sensors perform very well in these conditions. ISO can typically be pushed to 3,200–6,400 on modern cameras without unacceptable noise. Shutter speed is the primary challenge: aim for at least 1/200 second to freeze subject movement. Your lodge will advise you on the specific settings for the light conditions expected on your trekking day. Bringing a lightweight monopod can be helpful for steadying longer lenses without the bulk of a tripod.

Most elements of the itinerary are accessible to children and can be genuinely enriching family experiences. Game drives in Akagera have no age restrictions. The canopy walkway in Nyungwe is suitable for children who are comfortable at heights and can walk independently. Chimpanzee trekking has no official minimum age requirement, but the terrain is physically demanding, and children should be assessed individually for suitability. Gorilla trekking has a firm minimum age of 15 years, set by the Rwanda Development Board without exception. For families with younger children, the gorilla trekking day can be replaced with a guided forest walk, cultural village experience, or golden monkey trek, all of which are suitable for younger ages. Many families have used this itinerary as the occasion for a first proper safari with teenage children, with consistently excellent results.

The Best of Rwanda’s National Parks Safari is operated as a fully private experience. Your vehicle, your guide, and your planning are exclusively yours throughout all ten days. Game drives in Akagera are private to your group. Canopy walkways and forest walks in Nyungwe are led by your private guide with park rangers. Chimpanzee trekking groups have a maximum of eight participants per habituated community, but permits are secured individually, and you are unlikely to be combined with other groups unless specifically requested. Gorilla trekking groups are capped at eight visitors per family by law you may share this experience with other permit holders, but your Rwanda Gorilla Expeditions guide manages the private planning and ground experience exclusively for your group. If complete gorilla privacy is a priority, explore our exclusive gorilla trekking Rwanda option.

Other Rwanda Itineraries to Consider

The Best of Rwanda’s National Parks Safari is the most comprehensive expression of what this country offers. For travelers with shorter schedules or more focused interests, the following itineraries provide different entry points into the same extraordinary landscape.

For guests with three to four days focused exclusively on primate encounters in the north, the 3-Day Rwanda Gorillas & Golden Monkeys Safari and the 4-Day Exclusive Rwanda Gorilla & Golden Monkey Safari deliver the Volcanoes experience without the full cross-country circuit. The Luxury Rwandan Primate Safari combines Nyungwe and Volcanoes into an eight-day primate-focused journey for guests whose primary interest is Rwanda’s primate wildlife across both its major habitats.

Guests seeking the most exclusive possible gorilla encounters with a private family, with no other groups in the forest, and paired with an elite lodge should explore our exclusive gorilla trekking Rwanda options, which can be combined with any of the above itineraries. The behind-the-scenes gorilla experience places guests alongside primatologists for multiple consecutive days in the forest for approximately USD 15,000 per person, the deepest possible immersion in gorilla conservation science. Our honest and detailed Rwanda vs Uganda gorilla trekking comparison covers every meaningful variable for travelers who are still weighing their options between Rwanda and Uganda.

Begin Planning Rwanda’s Complete Safari.

The three national parks covered by this safari, Akagera, Nyungwe Forest, and Volcanoes, represent a wildlife portfolio that has no equivalent anywhere on the African continent. No other country of Rwanda’s size contains savannah, ancient rainforest, and Afromontane volcanic forest within a single border, with a different category of keystone wildlife species in each. No other country has rebuilt its conservation infrastructure with the rigor and speed that Rwanda has demonstrated over the past two decades. And no other safari itinerary that we know of sequences these three parks in a way that builds an experience rather than simply counting destinations.

What Rwanda Gorilla Expeditions brings to this journey is years of being in these forests and on these roads with guests of every kind: families, solo travelers, couples celebrating things that deserve better than a restaurant, and friends who have waited thirty years to make this trip together. We know which lodges work, which guides are exceptional, which gorilla families have large silverbacks and which have playful juveniles, and what to do when the unexpected happens. We know how to pace ten days so that the tenth day feels as alive as the first. And we know that the gap between considering this journey and doing it is almost always smaller than it appears.

Gorilla permits sell out. Peak-season lodges book up. If Rwanda is in your plans this year or next, the best thing you can do is start the conversation.
